What’s the difference between Freesat and Freeview?

The key difference between Freesat and Freeview is the way in which your TV service is delivered to you.

Whilst Freeview is delivered through an aerial, the Freesat broadcast arrives via satellite giving us a more resilient signal that isn’t as impacted by things like adverse weather.

Can I get Freesat in my area?

Freesat is delivered via satellite and is therefore available wherever you are in the UK. You will need a satellite dish, so it's best to ensure you have one installed before taking up the service or buying a Freesat product.

A few homes may not be able to get Freesat as their dish cannot be positioned to see the satellite properly. A satellite installer will be able to advise further on this. If you live in a rented property, conservation area or listed building there may be some restrictions on installing satellite equipment on your property. Please contact your landlord or local council for information on requirements in your building or area.

How are the new 4K boxes different from other Freesat products?

Our new 4K TV Boxes have seen developments in several areas:

Faster navigation through the different sections of the box
Improved User Interface
New Tuners to allow for 4K signal reception (you will need both a 4K-enabled TV and access to 4K content in order to make the most of this)
Compatibility with a wider set of satellite types, including Wideband LNB meaning you can record more programmes at the same time (this will depend on your set up - check the manuals for more information)

However some things remain the same. You still get:

Access to around 160 channels, including 20 in HD
Access to On Demand services - some free, some paid for (which you will need to subscribe to in order to use)

Question 4

Can I use Freesat without a SmartTV?

You can indeed. The Freesat box is an independent device and therefore it will work with most TVs. All you need to make sure is that you have a satellite cable to link to the set top box and the ability to connect a HDMI cable from the box to the TV.

Can I connect a sound-bar, amplifier or AV receiver?

Accepted Answer

Yes, our 4K TV Boxes are designed so that you can connect an audio device to your Set Top Box using your own optical cable.

Connect one end of the optical cable to your audio device and plug the other end into the optical socket on the back of the Box.

What different picture settings do you have?

Accepted Answer

Our latest Set Top Boxes have a variety of options for output resolution – ranging from 576 (Standard Definition) through to 2160 (or 4K). The box will default to the best picture setting available, but you can change it at any time within Picture Settings.
